I like to read, but the sorts of books I like don’t typically end up as eBooks that you can buy for readers like the Sony PRS-505. I am partial to action books and sci-fi and it always seems that only the mass appeal books end up in digital formats to me.

Sony has announced that its Reader Digital Book will become the first digital reader to support the new EPUB format starting next month. Sony’s PRS-505 will get the upgrade allowing it to read EPUB XML-based format becoming popular with some publishers.

The digital reader will also support Adobe eBooks with digital rights management and it is able to reflow standard PDF documents. Current owners of PRS-505 will be able to get the upgrade to support the new file format from the Sony support site.

Sony says that the PRS-505 will continue to support BBeB format for eBooks that Sony offers through its Sony eBook Store so owners with current libraries of books to new or updated machines. Sony also says that it will offer a special edition limited edition red PRS-505 model starting next month. The PRS-505 retails for $300.

Sony
