The geek world waited in anticipation for Apple to announce the 3G iPhone this summer and now that it is here (and sold out in most places), geeks are on to the next round of speculation about coming Apple products. According to Daily Mail in the UK, a source has told it that another iPhone will be coming in time for holiday shopping. The product is rumored to be an iPhone Nano. This is not a new rumor; many had a smaller iPhone pegged to be launching with the iPhone 3G this summer. That failed to materialize so now rumors point to a launch in time for the holiday shopping season. |

I am not much of a music fan. I like music well enough in the car or on long flights, but in my home, I don’t generally listen to music. Some people I know always have music playing in their homes, even when they are watching TV or movies. If you are one of the types who always have music, playing in the home Sonos introduced a pair of new network music players that will send music all around your home wirelessly. Sonos has introduced the second generation of its network music players and a new dual room bundle. The bundle is called the BU150 and the new players include the ZP120 and ZP90. |

If you use one of the small notebooks that fall into the ultraportable category, you may not have an optical drive onboard. Some cheap computers could lack a DVD burner as well. When it comes time for a new DVD drive or an upgrade, an external USB DVD burner is the way to go for many users. Buffalo has a new external USB Super-Multi drive called the DSM-SL20U2. The drive does what you expect a DVD burner to do — like burn DVDs and read them. It also adds a feature that you don’t expect from a PC DVD drive — upscaling for DVD movies. |

In an effort to sell more computers Dell has started offering more customization offerings for its computers. We are not talking simply letting a person choose what CPU or how much RAM their notebook comes with — Dell has done that for years. What Dell is doing is going after the user who wants the computer to look as good as it performs by choosing from multiple different colors. Many of Dell’s new notebooks come with some bright colors and for some users finding accessories to go with the bright colors can be hard. Dell has teamed up with several aftermarket accessory and peripheral makers for a line of “Designed for Dell” accessories. The latest addition to the line is from Creative with custom colors for its T10 speakers and EP-610 headphones. |
Memorex Gives Mobile Users an Essential Hard Drive

For a portable hard drive to be truly portable, it needs to be able to be powered totally by the USB port on your computer. That means that users don’t need an AC adapter for the drive to operate. When portable hard drives first started to hit the market most of them needed an AC adapter and some larger capacity portable drives still do. Today Memorex launched a new line of portable hard drives available in 160GB, 250GB, and 320GB that are all powered by the USB port of a user’s computer. The line is called the Essential TravelDrive series and uses 2.5-inch drives inside a case designed to fit inside a purse or laptop bag. |

I am an avid PC gamer and when I play, I always use headphones. I use headphones because they don’t disturb the people in my home and it helps block out the noise in the environment that disturbs my play. Typically, when I play I use a set of Razer Barracuda headphones that provide very good surround sound audio quality. Razer has introduced what may be my next set of headphones called the Megalodon 7.1 surround sound gaming headset. The headset uses Razer’s new Maelstrom Audio Engine to process positional audio cues 800% faster than comparable virtual surround sound systems according to Razer. |

If you get a bunch of geeks and around a table who are really in the home theater and HDTV’s, at some point of debate over the pros and cons of plasma versus LCD TVs will take place. The plasma fans say their preferred technology is brighter and offers more contrast. The LCD brigade will say their preferred technology last longer. The life span argument may finally be settled thanks to Panasonic. It announced that new plasma 1080p TVs have been added to its VIERA plasma line that can last for up to 100,000 viewing hours before the TV dims to half brightness. Panasonic’s 720p VIERA TVs are good for up to 60,000 hours. |
Samsung Digital Camera with Cool Analog Gauges

When it comes to cameras I really don’t care what they look like for the most part as long as the image quality is good and the camera isn’t pink or some other girly hue. I normally shoot with a Nikon D80 DSLR to get the best image quality, but the thing is heavy. I have found myself wishing on several occasions though that I was using a nice and compact point-and-shoot. I particularly like the new thin style point-and-shoot cameras like the new Samsung TL9 that have internal optical zoom. This features means that the lens doesn’t protrude out the front of the camera at all and you still get good levels of zoom. |
Toyota Unveils Winglet Mobility Robot

Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) announced today that it was developing what it calls a Personal Transport Assistance Robot known as Winglet. TMC says that it is still in the process of refining the Winglet and it plans the device to be a small and compact robot that will offer ease of movement and expand a user’s range of mobility. I can’t tell from that description if it intends the Winglet to be a scooter for the masses to use rather than a car, or if this is one sort of assistance device for those with problems walking like the elderly. At any rate, TMC has created three different Winglet models that only vary in how tall they are. The height difference for the models is from the different length handles used that give riders something to grasp. |
