Last month Mozilla launched its anticipated Firefox 3 web browser. Mozilla also announced that it wanted to set a record for the most downloads in the first 24 hours of a software product being offered. Guinness World Records audited the downloads of the software for the first 24 hours and announced today that Firefox 3 had set the record.

Firefox 3 was downloaded a total of 8,002,530 times in its first 24 hours of availability. That number is the official number after automated downloads and duplicate users were removed. Even though Firefox 3 set the download record, it still pales in comparison of market share to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.
